Detailed specifics
Overview
Flaws are permanent negative conditions that can be applied to the player character during gameplay. They are triggered when the game detects repeated actions or experiences, such as taking certain types of damage or performing specific behaviors frequently. When a flaw is triggered, the player is presented with the option to accept or reject it. Accepting the flaw grants an additional perk point but permanently applies the associated disadvantage.
Flaws can either apply their penalties constantly or only under specific conditions. Some activate only when certain triggers are present, such as being near a specific enemy type or under a particular gameplay state.
-
Repeated fall damage may trigger Acrophobia, reducing several character attributes.
-
Frequent exposure to certain enemies may trigger a fear-based flaw that activates when those enemies are nearby.
Repeated player action or damage pattern → Game proposes a flaw → Player chooses to accept or reject.
If the player accepts the flaw:
-
The flaw becomes permanent.
-
The character receives +1 perk point.
If the player rejects the flaw:
-
No penalty is applied.
-
The player does not receive the perk reward.
Players evaluate whether the additional perk point is worth the permanent disadvantage.
-
How often the flaw’s trigger condition will occur
-
Whether the penalty meaningfully impacts the character build
-
Whether the extra perk point improves the player’s overall progression
Players can strategically accept flaws that rarely activate, allowing them to gain additional perk points with minimal gameplay impact.
